Exercise

Exercise is a key component of recovery - but not just any exercise. Dr. Livingston uses many forms of passive and active exercise to promote the healing process.

Common forms of passive exercise are ultrasound, electric stimulation, and traction. Active exercise includes strething, isometrics, and strengthening.

Dr. Livingston also has a variety of exercise cycles and stair steppers that are used in the various phases of recovery.

Forms of Active Exercise

Stretching
The movement of a joint or muscle into its non-painful range of motion.

Isometrics
An isometric exercise is when a muscle is contracted against a fixed object such as a wall or hand. This has the effect of improving range of motion beyond regular stretching.

Strengthening
Various devices are used to stress a muscle or joint to produce increased strength, such as thera bands, free weights, exercise machinery, bicycles, and physioballs.
